All About Italic

Italic lettering — both calligraphic and typographic — has been an elegant part of the world of letterforms for a very long time. In the free morning program — held at the Baylor Book Arts & Letterpress Lab — Jeanne Dittmann will talk a little about the history of italic letters and then we will also give everyone a chance to handle italic type and pull a print designed and set in Italic type. Plus, you can take in all of the letter-related eye candy hanging in the lab!

One of the earliest italic typefaces by Aldus Manutius (1501).

In the afternoon workshop (limited to 12 participants), we will dive deeper into italic lettering. We will pull out some broad edged pens and discuss some nuances of italic lettering (no experience is required, but neither will this be a full introductory lesson for italic calligraphy). Then we will talk about the relationship between hand lettering and type design then spend the rest of the afternoon working with italic typefaces (some of which are particularly fragile because of the elegant flourishes, so they don’t get pulled out for just anyone!). You will walk away with a short quote that you have set and printed on one of our vintage printing presses.

Cost for the afternoon workshop is $75, payable to the WCG, most of which will, in turn, help support the Book Arts & Letterpress Lab. For the afternoon session, please have in mind a short quote of no more than 15 words that you would like to set.  **No supplies are needed for either the morning or afternoon session.**
